Emirates Center for Human Rights (ECHR) has been informed that UAE academic and economist Nasser Bin Ghaith has been on hunger strike since 25 February 2018 to protest violations of his human rights inside Al-Razeen prison in the UAE.
On 29 March 2017, the Federal Court of Appeal sentenced Dr. bin Ghaith to 10 years in prison on charges stemming from his exercise of the rights to free expression and association.Regarding the court's verdict prominent academic and economist Dr. Nasser bin Ghaith announced that he began a hunger strike on 2 April 2017.
Since his arrest in August 2015, Emirati authorities have constantly violated the rights of the academic and human rights defender Dr. Nasser Bin Ghaith and infringed his dignity and personal security and his right to a fair trial. In fact, he was subjected to torture, ill-treatment and enforced disappearance. He was also deprived of any family or lawyer visits.
Therefore, Emirati Center for Human Rights expresses full solidarity with DR.Nasser Bin Ghaith and holds the UAE authorities responsible for any health deterioration of Dr. Bin Ghaith as a consequence of the hunger strike and calls them on to provide him with necessary health care.
Emirati Center for Human Rights (ECHR) calls upon the authorities of the United Arab Emirates to:
- Immediately and unconditionally, release the academic, economic expert and human rights defender Dr. Nasser Bin Ghaith and other political opponents and human rights defenders and stop violating their rights which affects their dignity and humanity.
- Open a serious and impartial investigation into the exposure of Dr. Nasser Bin Ghaith to torture, ill-treatment and enforced disappearance and hold accountable every person responsible for these violations and ensure Dr. Bin Ghaith his full rights to remedy and rehabilitation.
- The UN Special Rapporteurs on torture, on human rights defenders and on the independence of the judiciary to urgently intervene with the UAE government in order to release Dr. Nasser Bin Ghaith and all other detainees of conscience.
