Six months since the arrest of leading human rights defender Ahmed Mansoor

It has now been six months since Ahmed was arrested for peacefully exercising his right to freedom of expression in the UAE.

Ahmed Mansoor is believed to be held in a detention facility adjacent to Al-Wathba prison. The Public Prosecution for Cybercrimes charged him with publishing false information and rumors as well as promoting sectarian agenda through his writings on social media.

Six months later, Ahmed is still being held in solitary confinement and, other than a fleeting visit shortly after his arrest, he had not been allowed to see his wife until this week.

On March 20, 2017, the State Security Apparatus arrested human rights defender Ahmed Mansoor at 3:00 am after breaking into his house in Ajman and inspecting all his rooms and their contents, including the children's rooms.  He was later taken to an undisclosed location where he was prevented from having any family, lawyer or even doctor visits until the press release on March 29, 2017. Mr. Ahmed Mansoor was convicted by the Public Prosecution for Cybercrimes on the basis of Federal Law No. 5 of 2012 on Combating Cyber-Crimes.

Emirati government has not responded to the numerous demands of international bodies and organizations, special rapporteurs and human rights figures, calling for the immediate and unconditional release of human rights activist Ahmed Mansoor and urging them to desist from violating his rights to personal safety and freedom of opinion and expression and to review UAE laws that violate the basic rights and freedoms  and the relevant international standards.

Human rights activists and members of the media from around the world will participate in a Tweet (Twitter) Storm on Wednesday, September 20, calling upon the UAE authorities to immediately and unconditionally release Ahmed Mansoor and to ensure full respect of his right to freedom of expression and opinion.

The tweet storm is to be kicked off at 5 pm at London time, 8 pm (UAE time), using the hashtag #FreeAhmed.
