Arrests Spread in the UAE as UN Condemns Crackdown

Over the past 36 hours we have seen three further arrests in the United Arab Emirates. These are Dr. Essa Al Suwaidi, Salem Hamdun Al Shehi and Juma’a al Felasi.

Dr. Essa Al Suwaidi is a former director of the Abu Dhabi Educational Zone, Salem Hamdun Al Shehi is a prominent lawyer and Juma’a al Felasi is a well-known critic of the state.

Juma’a’s arrest comes after he was subjected to an attack by six pro-government thugs in Dubai on March 6th 2012.

The total number of individuals being held now total 30, including the 16 held prior to the crackdown initiated by the Abu Dhabi Attorney General on Sunday, July 15th.

Until now, the whereabouts of those detained since Sunday has remained undisclosed, those held have not been charged and the detainees have been denied access to both family visitation & legal counsel.

Enclosed here is a list of all those detained along with the date of their arrest, their position in society and comments on their detainment.

The Emirates Centre for Human Rights call on the UAE authorities to either charge the detainees formally or release them unconditionally.

Should those held be subjected to trial, we have strong concerns that any trial will not meet internationally recognized standards in fairness. As such, we are calling on internationally based human rights lawyers to form a group of observers in anticipation of trials.

Furthermore, we welcome the statement by the spokesperson for Rupert Colville, Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, in which he stated that the UAE government should ‘guarantee that human rights defenders are able carry out their work without fear of reprisals and urge them [the UAE government] to release those who have been detained for peaceful exercise of their fundamental human rights’.

The UAE authorities continue to arrest peaceful activists under the banner of national security, subjecting them to arbitrary detention and denial of basic rights such as access to familial visitation or legal counsel.

We urge the authorities to stop this unprecedented wave of arrests, disclose the location of those detained and implement agreed legal procedures to ensure the rights of all citizens are protected.
